ARFID TREATMENT IN SAN DIEGO
An accepting and individualized approach to supporting adults and adolescents ages 12 and up seeking Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) Treatment in San Diego & CA in person or online.
Do you or your child have a limited list of preferred/accepted food? Does this impact your physical, mental, and emotional health? As a parent, do you often worry about your child’s growth and development? Are family mealtimes often a battle ending with tears and frustration? Does eating in social settings cause you or your child stress and discomfort?
If so, I am here to help! I have extensive training and experience helping those struggling with ARFID and selective eating (also known as extreme picky eating) develop a trusting relationship with food.
You are not alone and you are not broken! Many of my clients have expressed desire to “just eat normally” or that they “should” be able to “just eat.” ARFID and selective eating develops as a result of uncomfortable or painful experiences with food while learning to eat.
MY APPROACH INCLUDES:
Acceptance
I embrace that every person or child has their own unique abilities, strengths, challenges, and tendencies that impact how they may interact with food. While we will work together to establish common goals meant to promote health, I welcome that everyone’s experience in treatment will be different and individualized.
Understanding
I am not a dietitian who will give you or your child a meal plan to follow right away. I take time to get to know you or your child and what your experience with eating and feeding has been like up until now.
Foundation
I will support you or your child with expanding food choices and trying new foods in a variety of settings when you are ready. I will not pressure or force you or your child to eat certain foods in certain ways. Exposure work develops along the way with our initial goals being building a safe feeding environment and getting in enough food in tolerable ways.
Peace
I have many ways of supporting you, your child, and/or your family with reducing stress and chaos around food and feeding such as reworking meal time routines, introducing grounding techniques, and establishing ways to navigate environmental stressors. I utilize THE STEPS + APPROACH.
Parent Support
When working with children, teens, and their families, I provide parents with support and tools they need to feel calm and empowered when feeding their child and their family. I offer and encourage parent only time during sessions to allow space for parents to process their own worries, fears, concerns, etc.
Collaboration
I will work closely with other care team members such as therapists, physicians, and psychiatrists in order to provide you with a more well-rounded and satisfying experience.
Exposure Work
I can help you or your child increase variety, expand tolerable/preferred foods, and feel more peace eating in social settings at your own pace. I will collaborate with you to develop effective cope ahead plans for introducing new foods in tolerable ways.
