Frequently Asked Questions

I offer care for men, women, and people of all ages. I also work with teens, children, and families. My practice is LGBT-Q affirming.

In most cases, I will be able to schedule you within 5-7 business days of your request to schedule. If you have a Health Net HMO plan I will need your medical group to approve prior authorization prior to scheduling.

A follow up session is typically 30-60 minutes long. The length and frequency of sessions is something we will collaborate on after completing the initial assessment.

Sessions are highly individualized but some examples of what to expect might be:

  • Exploring thoughts and judgements around food, amounts of food, food experiences and working on challenging or reframing them
  • Exploring how mood may impact intake- for example how anxiety/stress may impact your appetite or how you experience OR vice versa- how foods may be causing anxiety.
  • Providing support with things like forming grocery lists, planning meals and snacks, fitting food prep/planning into your day.
  • I am not a dietitian who will give you a meal plan to follow in the initial assessment. I believe it is important to work on meal guidelines together that take into account your individual needs and help you eat enough to support your body. I may ask you to keep a food journal unless this is not supportive for you (which is common). This is to learn more about your experiences with food and is not meant for writing down every detail of your intake. Oftentimes the food journals I use include sections that encourage you to check in with what is happening in your thoughts, emotions, and physical body. While I do not provide therapy, this gives me helpful information about your eating experiences.
  • Some approaches that I use you may have heard of include mindful eating and intuitive eating. These approaches will be tailored to your needs and I use many other modalities too.

The higher cost of the initial assessment is there to cover additional time spent connecting with other members of your treatment team and additional time spent working on your treatment plan and guidelines for what treatment may look like moving forward. After the initial assessment is complete, I use this information to set up connections with your fellow team members and work on potential meal plan guidelines/treatment plan guidelines using your individual goals and evidenced based nutrition recommendations.

Frequency and time is highly variable based on why you’re seeking care and where you are in your nutrition and healing journey. Length of care will be determined between both of us after the initial assessment and will be re-evaluated as work continues. If you’re coming to me for eating disorder treatment, anticipate a need for weekly visits for at least 4-6 months. It’s common to continue to need weekly care well beyond that time frame although sometimes people step down to less frequent visits sooner.

I am currently in network with Health Net and Blue Shield of California. I can also offer a superbill that you can submit to your insurance in hopes of getting reimbursed. It is your responsibility to inquire with your insurance company regarding benefits and submit superbills (I can provide you with  instructions when you schedule). The session fee must be paid at the time of service.

I offer nutrition counseling sessions online and in person in my office at 1685 W Bernardo Dr #245, San Diego, CA 92127

Health at Every Size (HAES) is a model for improving health that does not focus on body weight, shape, or size and instead encourages a “fulfilling and meaningful lifestyle” through eating according to internally directed signals of hunger and satiety and engaging in joyful movement. It is an evidence based approach with an extensive body of supportive research indicating HAES is associated with statistically and clinically relevant improvements in blood pressure, blood lipids, physical activity, and body image. I am not offering groups at this time, but the addition of support groups is something I am looking into adding in the future!

What Fee Do You Charge For Sessions?

Initial Assessment

60 minute individual assessment- $250
90 minute family assessment (split between child & parents)- $350

The initial assessment is a time for me to get to know you and your experience better. We will review your current concerns related to food, movement, and body image, past experiences, medical and nutrition history, and desired goals. Time permitting, we will review a potential framework for follow up sessions so you can leave with an idea of what care can look like moving forward. I also take time the week following the initial assessment to connect with your care team.

Follow Up Session

60 minute follow up session- $165
30 minute follow up session- $90

The length and frequency of follow up sessions is something we will collaborate on after completing the initial assessment. In order for you to get the most out of these sessions, I typically recommend starting with weekly, 60 min sessions. I do understand certain limitations like time, finances, and schedule may impact someone’s ability to commit to this and will take this into account always.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are paying out of the pocket the full payment of the initial assessment is required to schedule the assessment. Should you need to reschedule outside of our 48 hour cancellation window, your payment will simply transfer to the rescheduled appointment. Should you cancel with less than 48 hours notice or change your mind about working with us, there is a $100 non-refundable fee that will be withheld from that payment. The rest will be refunded or credited towards your rescheduled session.
